McGregor Vineyard turns 40 this year and the Winery had a small event to celebrate on July 30th. As “Clan Club” members at McGregor’s, we would be there. This was an intimate gathering with a nominal fee held in the barrel room for a few small groups over the course of the day. Anyone that did not want to attend the event that day could still enjoy the live music, discounts on select wines, and free tastings that were offered for the anniversary celebration.
In the candle lit barrel room, John McGregor presented their latest sparkling wines, the 2008 Blanc de Blanc and 2008 Blanc de Noir, paired with Stacy McGregor’s Grilled Shrimp, Watermelon Gazpacho, Crostini topped with Lively Run’s Chevre’ Cheese and Homemade Blueberry Jam, and Walnut-Apricot-Blue Cheese Crisps.
The event began by raising our glasses to toast the 40 year old vineyard, one of the oldest in the region. We enjoyed the crisp bubbly and the perfectly paired hors’ d’oeuvres while listening to John speak of his family’s contribution to grape growing and winemaking in the Finger Lakes region. Winemaking is no trivial task, but as John described the process involved in making sparkling wine, we learned it takes commitment and patience as well as a great deal of manual labor.
In all, this event offered great wines, great foods, and interesting information in an elegant yet informal setting. We always enjoy visiting the McGregor Winery and look forward to the next 40 years of McGregor wines!
